『還完債再走』
小和尚救回一個輕生者。
那人悠悠醒轉,對方丈說:“謝謝大師。
但不必費力氣救我,我已下定決心不再活了。
今天不死,明天也還是要去了結的。
方丈嘆了口氣說:
“我確實制止不了你。可是我想問問,你的債都還了嗎?”
那人感到很奇怪:“我雖然家境貧寒,但溫飽尚可,並不曾借債。”
方丈緩緩開口:
“你的生命借自父母,你便欠下父母的債;
你的吃、穿、用借自天地山川,便欠下天地的債;
你的知識和智慧借自先生,便欠下先生的債。
人這一輩子欠下的諸如此類的債真是太多了,
你都償還了嗎?”
那人惶然說:
“如此說來,我確實欠下了債。可我並不知道如何才能償還?”
方丈笑笑說:“這有何難?只兩字就足夠了。”
那人迷惑了,口裏說:“請大師指點。”
方丈又是輕輕一笑:“「珍惜」二字而已。”
那人沈思了一會兒,朝方丈拜了幾拜,
轉身出了寺門,精神抖擻地走了。

窮忙!360萬上班族 月入不到3萬
〔自由時報記者鄭琪芳/台北報導〕國內工作貧窮問題(Working poor)日漸惡化。行政院主計處調查,今年月收入不到三萬元的受僱者有三五九.七萬人,佔總受僱者約四成五,其中更有一○三.八萬人月收入不到兩萬元,已經連續兩年突破百萬人,窮忙族愈來愈多。

主計處說明,受僱者主要工作收入包含薪資、加班費、佣金、獎金及小費等經常性收入,今年全國受僱者約八○六.六萬人,平均每月收入三萬四四三一元,雖較去年略增六八八元,但低於二○○七及二○○八年,仍未回到金融海嘯前的水準。
按收入級距分析,今年月收入不到一萬五千元有二十八.一萬人,月收入一萬五千元以上、不到兩萬元有七十五.七萬人,合計月收入不到兩萬元有一○三.八萬人,遠高於二○○八年的八十四.三萬人。
至於月收入兩萬以上、不到兩萬五千元則有一二二萬人,兩萬五千元以上、不到三萬元有一三三.九萬人,總計月收入三萬元以下有三五九.七萬人,不僅高於金融海嘯前的水準,且佔總受僱者的四十四.六%;換句話說,國內將近一半上班族,月收入不到三萬元。

主計處指出,今年月收入較低的受僱者,雖較去年景氣谷底時減少,但仍較前年增加,除了景氣影響之外,也與就業型態改變有關,近年來「非典型就業」(臨時工、部分工時及派遣工作)愈來愈多,今年以七十二.三萬人續創新高,由於非典型就業收入不如全職工作,工作貧窮問題日益嚴重。
官員表示,全球化也是影響薪資的原因,台商持續移往海外投資,台灣勞工薪資被中國及東南亞國家的薪資水準「拉住」,使得國內薪資停滯甚至倒退。

『他们在拍什么』Christian Als,影子之城
“The Shadow City”是丹麦摄影师Christian Als历时2年完成的一个拍摄项目,在这个项目中,摄影师深入肯尼亚最大的贫民窟Kibera地区,记录肯尼亚社会发展中阶级分化所导致的严重贫富差距以及社会最底层的生活状态。

“联合国报告指出,2008年底,全球有半数人口选择在城市里定居,这是人类历史上城市人口首次超过50%。与此同时,全球城市郊区贫民区的人口亦突破10亿,换句话说,每3个城市人口中就有1个贫民区居民。
2030年前,全球城市人口还将增长20亿人,至少90%增长来自发展中国家,而这90%中,将有超过一半为贫民区居民。
Kibera贫民区与肯尼亚首都内罗毕距离仅5公里,是世界上人口密度最高的地区之一,在这个面积仅相当于曼哈顿中央公园的区域中,生活着超过100万人,占内罗毕总人口的四分之一。
Kibera面临着恶劣卫生条件、污染、治安、宗教冲突等诸多问题,但是其人口总数依然保持着高速增长,超过一半Kibera贫民区人口年龄在15岁以下,婴儿数量则达到10万,婴儿夭折率则是内罗毕市的四倍。
我希望这个项目能够让我们重新审视城市不平衡发展中的弊端,并为现状与未来做出改善。”

Should doctors be able to erase our worst memories?如果醫生能抺掉我們最可怕的記憶?

It might be nice to forget about the parts of our past that make us cringe: the horrible ex, that awful week at work, the things that you don't want to admit you lived through.
But there's a serious side to the wishful thinking: With suicide rates among war veterans double and triple that of the general population, researchers are looking for ways to combat more serious mental health issues, like post-traumatic stress disorder. A recent report out of Johns Hopkins University (published in Science magazine) shows that it may be possible to erase traumatic memories entirely.
Some types of behavioral therapy, like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), can help patients target and eliminate the distress associated with trauma -- but the memory can return because it hasn't actually been erased. This new research focuses on removing certain proteins that form in brain's fear center, which could eliminate the memory completely. Richard L. Huganir, professor and chair of neuroscience at the Hopkins School of Medicine and a co-author of the report, told The Baltimore Sun that protein-eliminating drugs could "enhance behavioral therapy for such conditions as post-traumatic stress disorder," indicating that it could be useful for dealing with things that are much more serious than that Freshman year faux pas you'd like to forget.
Researchers have tested the protein theory on mice, and they think the process would be the same in humans. After using electrical shocks to condition the mice to fear a sound, they noticed that calcium-permeable proteins were created in the amygdala of the mice's brains and lasted for a day or two. The proteins mediate signals traveling in the brain; by eliminating them, scientists think they could eliminate the memory that triggered them.
But people are far more complex than mice. Children's brains can sometimes rewire themselves to work around -- or even work without -- malfunctioning areas. While some memories can be painful, we need them in order to learn from our mistakes. And our memories are fallible: What if it's just a realistic dream? What about recovered memories and false memory syndrome? And since one traumatic memory can often trigger others, when you're erasing, where do you draw the line?

Following the food through Old Georgetown in Penang

CNNGo takes a pictorial peek at the glorious food of Old Georgetown in Penang, Malaysia
Anyone who's been to Malaysia's Penang will inevitably mention the charm, sights and tastes and smells of Old Georgetown, the old town section which was named a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2008.
A walk through Georgetown is a walk through its 200 year history -- an eclectic collection of historic buildings in various styles from art deco style to classical Chinese, from Islamic mosques to Buddhist temples, from old English colonial mansions to Malay, Thai and Indonesian inspired architecture.

Shophouses built from the early 20th century have been carefully preserved and most are still run by family members of the founders.

Mr Tan cooks up Hokkien Char, a fried egg noodle with seafood. Hawker stalls are found in every corner of Georgetown and cook up the freshest dishes made to order.

The venerable hawker stall favorite, Char Kway Teow, is a flat rice noodle stir fried with prawns, cockles and bean sprouts.

Georgetown's buildings and storefronts are a colorful and ecletic bunch incorporating designs from Europe, Southeast Asia and China over numerous architectural periods.

Mr Yakkup, a tea hawker, makes the Malaysian favourite, Teh Tarik or 'pulled tea' whose name comes from the pouring process used to make the tea. It is made with black tea and plenty of condensed milk.

A curry paste hawker stall does brisk early morning business.

Dim sum is a morning favorite in Georgetown but it is a much more colorful affair than that found elsewhere.

82 year old Mr Lee has been an incense maker in Georgetown for over 60 years. He uses the finest sandalwood powder imported from Australia which creates a very pleasant aroma.

Yu char kuih, Chinese dough fritters, are a common staple in Chinese cuisine. The Chew sisters make it with the recipe that their father concocted after he moved from Xiamen to Georgetown. The result is a yu char kuih that tastes lighter and more fragrant than its Chinese cousin.
